The International Grammar School Sydney Ltd ( IGS) is a unique independent, co-educational school located in the heart of Sydney. With over 1,300 students from preschool to Year 12, IGS is known for its inclusive culture, global outlook, and progressive approach to learning. The School is widely respected for its strong focus on language acquisition, music, and intercultural understanding, underpinned by a commitment to academic excellence and student wellbeing.
Founded on the values of diversity, community, and personal development, IGS offers a vibrant, inner-city campus experience that blends high educational standards with a warm and nurturing environment. Governed by a skills-based Board of Directors, IGS operates as a not-for-profit company limited by guarantee. It continues to innovate in curriculum delivery and is deeply engaged in preparing students to be future-ready global citizens.
The opportunity
IGS is seeking to appoint a new Chair of the Board in 2025, following a lengthy period of growth and expansion. This is a significant opportunity to lead a dynamic and committed Board, and to support the School’s continued growth, reputation, and community impact.
As Chair, you will:
- Provide strategic leadership and ensure robust governance in alignment with IGS’s mission and values
- Represent the School externally, championing key partnerships, stakeholder relationships, and philanthropic initiatives
- Actively support the Principal and leadership team in aligning strategy, culture, and performance
- Guide and mentor fellow Board Directors, fostering a high-performing, collaborative, and future-focused governance culture
About you:
You are a strategic leader with a demonstrated commitment to education, innovation, and social purpose. You bring:
- Significant experience as a Chair or senior Board member in complex, mission-led organisations
- Deep understanding of governance, stakeholder engagement, and philanthropic growth
- Strong ambassadorial skills and the gravitas to represent IGS across diverse external forums
- A collaborative leadership style and the ability to support and elevate the contributions of fellow Directors
- Alignment with IGS’s values and an enthusiasm for contributing to a vibrant school community
- Relevant professional qualifications and extensive expertise with reference to the skills and capabilities set out in the Board’s Skills Matrix
Mandatory requirements include:
- Over 18, not bankrupt or disqualified from company directorship
- Valid Working With Children Check for Volunteers and national criminal history check
- Completion of 12 hours of approved professional learning every three years
