The Organisation

Founded in 1916, RSL NSW is a member-based veterans’ charity dedicated to supporting veterans and veterans’ families through advocacy, camaraderie and commemoration.

Through a network of more than 310 sub-Branches and 30,000 members across NSW, RSL NSW connects veterans and veterans’ families to vital support services and community networks.Working closely with partner charities, including RSL LifeCare, the organisation enables access to a wide range of supports including DVA claims assistance and advocacy, financial and housing assistance, counselling, homelessness support, employment and training pathways, wellbeing programs, and opportunities for commemoration, connection,community.

RSL NSW is currently delivering the final phase of its 2021-2026 Strategic Plan and investing more than $12 million to strengthen veteran services, engagement, and organisational capability. This investment is focused on ensuring every veteran in NSW understands what the RSL stands for, the support available to them, and how they can access it.

RSL NSW does not operate clubs or poker machines, and RSL NSW and its sub-Branches are separate entities from RSL Clubs.

The Opportunity

Reporting to the Chair and Board of Directors, the Chief Executive Officer will lead RSL NSW to deliver its purpose, strategic priorities and performance outcomes while strengthening the organisation’s impact across the veteran community.

Based at ANZAC House in the Sydney CBD and leading a team of five direct reports, the CEO will provide both strategic and operational leadership across a complex and highly visible organisation.

The role requires a leader capable of building trusted relationships across a diverse stakeholder landscape – including government, ex-service organisations, members, sub-Branches and the broader veteran community – while providing strong assurance and guidance to the Board on organisational performance, strategy and governance.

Key responsibilities include:
  • Leading the delivery of the organisation’s strategic plan and driving organisational performance and impact
  • Building and leading a high-performing executive leadership team and organisational culture
  • Strengthening and maintaining trusted relationships with government, ex-service organisations, members and key partners
  • Providing clear strategic advice, assurance and operational oversight to the Board
  • Ensuring strong governance, financial stewardship and organisational sustainability
A veteran background, or a strong connection to the veteran community, is essential.

About You

You are an experienced and credible executive leader with the ability to lead complex organisations and inspire diverse stakeholders around a shared purpose.

You are comfortable operating in highly visible environments and engaging across broad stakeholder groups, balancing strategic leadership with operational insight and sound judgement.

You will bring:
  • CEO or senior executive experience leading complex organisations
  • Strong strategic leadership capability and the ability to deliver organisational performance and transformation
  • Demonstrated experience working closely with Boards and governance frameworks
  • Exceptional stakeholder engagement, relationship management and influencing skills
  • Strong financial and operational leadership capability
  • Experience representing organisations with government, community or sector stakeholders
Experience within a member-based, not-for-profit or purpose-driven organisation, and an understanding of the veteran or defence community, is essential.
