Australia’s Federal Government, delivered through the Australian Public Service (APS), plays a critical role in shaping national prosperity, social cohesion and the strength of our democratic institutions. More than 185,000 public servants contribute to policy design, program delivery, regulatory oversight and frontline services, providing evidence-based advice to Parliament and advancing national priorities across economic management, social services, national security and long-term reform.

The APS is navigating a period of substantial change. Royal Commissions, increased public scrutiny and shifting community expectations have intensified the need for transparency, capability and integrity across policy and service delivery functions. Public confidence has been challenged in areas relating to digital transformation, data use and outcomes for vulnerable Australians, resulting in a renewed focus on accountability and citizen-centred design.

APS leaders operate in a rapidly evolving context shaped by global uncertainty, technological disruption, cost-of-living pressures and growing expectations for openness. Rebuilding internal capability, strengthening policy expertise and improving trust in government are central priorities. The APS must also maintain its social licence through contemporary workforce practices, fair remuneration structures and a commitment to public value.

With responsibilities spanning whole-of-government strategy, complex reform agendas and stewardship of Australia’s democratic processes, the APS requires leaders who can bring innovation, sound judgement and strong public purpose.
