Australians supported by the sector

Australia’s health sector sits at the centre of our social and economic fabric, spanning public and private hospitals, primary care, specialist and allied health services, diagnostics and community-based models of care. Hospitals remain the anchor of the system, accounting for over half of total health services revenue, with demand structurally underpinned by an ageing population and the rising prevalence of chronic disease.

Australians aged 65 and over now represent the largest share of health service utilisation, driving sustained demand across acute, subacute and rehabilitation services. At the same time, public hospitals are managing capacity constraints, workforce shortages and elective surgery backlogs, prompting renewed focus on funding reform and whole-of-system solutions .

Private hospitals continue to play a critical role in elective surgery and specialist care, yet face mounting financial sustainability pressures, funding disputes and labour constraints. Across both systems, providers are navigating tightening margins, heightened community expectations and an urgent need for workforce capability.

Digital transformation is accelerating change. Telehealth, AI-enabled diagnostics and integrated electronic health records are reshaping care delivery, improving access and supporting more coordinated patient journeys . Concurrently, policymakers and providers are shifting focus toward preventative and community-based care to relieve pressure on hospital settings and improve long-term sustainability .

The coming decade will demand leadership that can balance clinical excellence, commercial stewardship and system reform — all within a constrained funding and workforce environment.
